The 2004 Daytona 500 was the 46th running of the event and took place on February 15, 2004 at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. The race was 200 laps long and covered a distance of 500 miles.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. won the race, driving for Dale Earnhardt Inc. in a Chevrolet. This victory was particularly emotional as it came three years after his father, Dale Earnhardt Sr., was killed in a crash during the 2001 Daytona 500. Earnhardt Jr. also became the third generation in his family to win a Daytona 500, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, Ralph Earnhardt.
The race saw 14 caution flags for a total of 58 laps, and there were 13 different leaders. Earnhardt Jr. led a total of 59 laps, including the final 20 laps to secure the victory. He beat out Tony Stewart, who finished in second place, and Scott Wimmer, who finished in third.
The win was Earnhardt Jr.'s first Daytona 500 victory and his second career win at Daytona International Speedway. The victory solidified his reputation as a top driver in NASCAR and added another chapter to the Earnhardt family's storied history at the Daytona 500.
